Wanted: People For Thanksgiving

November 24, 2008 · 1 Comment

turkey_01_thumbIf you don’t have anywhere to be on thanksgiving, shoot Monique White an e-mail.

White, from Littleton, Colorado, created an ad on Craigslist last Tuesday, inviting anybody who wanted to attend her Thanksgiving dinner to send her an e-mail and go.

White was flooded with hundreds of e-mails, not all for people wanting to attend her dinner, but many from people saying she’s doing a good thing.

White says she is doing this because last year she and her family were on the verge of being homeless, and she just wanted to give back to the less fortunate.

So far 32 people are attending Thursday, and there is still room for more. The amount of food includes four turkeys, six pumpkin pies, 12 cans of vegtables and 60 rolls.

However, with no screening process or any way of fully knowing the people she is inviting over her house, what is to stop one of the dinner patrons to be a typical craigslist crazy, or a serial killer? Which there have been incidents before with someone being both of those things.

Snow Already?

November 17, 2008 · 1 Comment

lake_effect_snow

Diagram of lake-effect snow.

It’s mid November and snow has already hit New York, pretty hard.

Lake-effect snow has hit the surrounding area around Buffalo, N.Y, in Erie county, Monday morning. Around two feet of snow has already hit the area, and another 6 inches is expected tonight.

Lake-effect snow occurs when cold winds pass over warm lake water, which causes energy and water vapor gets picked up and it then snows on the shores.

This should provide some interesting weather to an otherwise uninteresting game in Buffalo tonight, with the Cleavland Browns (3-6)  facing the Buffalo Bills (5-4) at home on Monday Night Football.

The Rays? Really?

September 30, 2008 · 1 Comment

Who would of thought the Devil Rays would finish atop the AL East after finishing withe the worst record in baseball last season. I knew they would be good, but I predicted them to finish third and only contend for the Wild Card. Looks like really dropping the Devil from their names and changing uniforms really exercised their demons from the past.

The real reason the Rays have suceeded is their talent. The Rays have been so successful this year has been their youth has finally developed and their young pitching has also developed and matured. The Rays, in fact, don’t have any hitter batting over .300, their top hitter is Navarro with an average of .295. But, the Rays play like a team and they have fun doing it, maybe their too inexperinced to care and understand what they are doing really hasn’t been done in history. Maybe its Joe Madden, who will probably be my only pre-season award pick to be correct.

Either way the Rays are on quite the historic and impressive run, too bad none of their fans seem to notice.

How about a Rays vs Cubs World Series, who do you cheer for? Who’s the underdog?

NYC Really Doesn’t Want You To Smoke

September 22, 2008 · 1 Comment

New York in recent years have declared war on smoking, with the 2002 smoking ban, and the constant ads on TV showing suffering and crippled smokers. NYC and the NYC Health Department are continuing their all out assault on smoking with some new graphic advertisements.

The department’s new catchy anti-smoking slogan, “Cigarettes are eating you alive,” are now being advertised on matchbooks with some graphic photos, such as the diseased gums as shown below, tumors, and cancerous lungs.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Microsoft CEO Bill Gates have already teamed up to spend over $500 million to combat smoking for the next 5 years.

At this trend New Yorkers are going to miss the time when the most graphic pictures on the thousands of anti-smoking ads that litter the city was the guy with the hole in his throat.

Maybe China Just Doesn’t Like Children

September 15, 2008 · 1 Comment

Months after the chinese toys were being recalled, and a chinese little girl was deemed to ugly to sing at the Beijing Olympics, a new scandal has broken out involving China and children.

Over 400 babies have been stricken ill after ingesting powdered milk distributed by the Sanlu group, a powered milk distributor, which New Zealand based Fonterra dairy company has a 43% stake in.

Fonterra has said that they warned Sanlu about the powered milk which was contaminated with Melamine, an industrial chemical used to produce plastics, the first week of August. Sanlu took about six weeks to initiate the recall.

Chinese officials have said they were only told about the contamination Monday, and have been recieving complaints about the milk since March. There have been 19 arrests so far over the milk scandal.

Melamine is believed to cause kidney stones if ingested. It is also believed that one Child has died because of the contaminated milk.

Who Needs Springsteen, Bon Jovi, or Oprah when you have…..Daddy Yankee??

September 1, 2008 · 1 Comment

Republican presidential candidate John McCain has attacked Democratic candidate Barrack Obama repeatedly for his role as being too much of a celebrity. Which is true, for both. McCain and Obama are very much celebrities, you turn any news channel and you will see more of them than anything else.

But McCain does have a point in criticizing Obama’s “rock star” status. I mean look at the stadium spectacle/ Obama concert that was the finale of the Democratic National Convention. Celebrities flock to Obama, from Clooney and De Niro to text messages from Scarlett Johansson. But to Obama’s credit he doesn’t seem to deny it and he kind of embraces it as he seems to always be seen with some kind of celebrity.

But then you see, as in the video above, McCain trying to show he has some celebrity ammunition by introducing Daddy Yankee? Whats next a speech by Flava Flav right before McCain’s acceptance speech at the Republican Convention?

McCain should stick to one side, keep calling Obama a celebrity and showing he’s above that tactic. Not get guys like Daddy Yankee to show his support, it just looks like desperation of trying to keep up with Obama’s celebrity status. Unless your trying to use Daddy Yankee’s hit “Gasolina” to get your gas solutions across, forget about that endorsement.

Its not McCain’s fault he doesn’t have the same celebrity friends as Obama. Hollywood has always been highly liberal. So of course they are going to flock to support a Democratic young African-American presidential canadate. Republicans (especially now) can’t compete with that. Besides, Republicans have the biggest celebrity on their side anyway, Jesus, right?
